Pseudowire Emulation Edge to Edge (PWE3) is a mechanism that emulates the essential attributes of network services such as Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM), frame relay, and Ethernet over a packet-switched network (PSN). PWE3 provides a powerful tool for convergence by extending the use of intellectual property (IP) and multiprotocol label switching (MPLS) towards the edge. Service providers can transport traditional revenue-bearing services that have been agreed through service-level agreements by using cost-effective and scalable IP/MPLS or Ethernet networks. It also allows service providers to roll out new innovative services such as video and fixed mobile convergence (FMC).
